Pretty In Pink

I have had an obsession with pink beauty products for quite a while now, and I thought it only fair that I share my current favourites with you today. I know it's traditional to write a pink themed beauty post at the start of spring, but you all know me - I don't like to play by the rules.
I'm starting off with with the Charlotte Tilbury Cheek To Chic Blush in 'Love Glow' as it is too gorgeous to deny first mention. I bought this as a little Christmas present to myself last year, and I have loved it ever since. I love that is has two different shades. You are supposed to use both shades together, but I have also been using one or the other as well. It makes it a handy product to travel with. I know Charlotte Tilbury is an expensive brand, but believe me when I say that they are worth it and more. They are exceptional in quality and this blush is no exception. It applies so smoothly and blends perfectly, I really want to try out some of the other shades available. Speaking of availability, NYX has become more readily available here in the UK. I picked up a couple of their Soft Matte Lip Creams a couple of months ago, and I have been loving wearing them! I have the shades Prague (dark raspberry) and Antwerp (mid-toned pink), and they are both extrememly wearable. The lip creams have a matte finish as the name would suggest, but don't underestimate the presence of the word 'soft'. They have a creamy texture that softens the effects of a usual matte lipstick so they are a lot more wearable.
I've recently fallen back in love with the Essie nail lacquers (did I ever even fall out of love with them), and I've added a few new shades to my collection. I'm really into more neutral shades at the moment, and the shade 'In Stitches' has been my go-to this month. It is a gorgeous shade, and is not too dissimilar to another shade in my collection. It is a darker pinky nude, and is perfect for both everyday and evening wear. The Essie polishes are my all time favourite as they wear so well on the nails. It takes them ages to start chipping!

And last but by no means least, I have been loving the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in 'Bahama'. I'm really into matte finishes (if you couldn't tell with three being in one post ha!), and these ones are gorgeous! They are more matte than the NYX lip creams, and have a more velvety feel (obvs). Bahama is quite a cool toned nude, not as warm toned as you would expect. That being said it still looks absolutely gorgeous and is a must for any lip product addict.

Skincare That Works

Finding out what skincare Is right for you is pretty much a trial and error process. It has honestly taken me years to build a skincare routine that works for me. I'm still on the hunt for products that will banish spots for good, but there are a few staples in my collection that help my skin whatever problem it is facing at the time.

Cleansers // If I had to pick one formulation of cleanser, it would have to be cream. They are so gentle on your skin and really great for removing makeup - a pretty fail safe product for me and anybody who owns a face. My all time favourite is the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, and although it is slightly pricey to use all the time - I like to make sure I've always got some in my collection for when my skin is feeling a little sensitive or dry. One of my current go-to cleansers is the Good Things Skin Manuka Honey Creamy Cleanser. OMG words cannot describe how much I love this cleanser! And even though it is well under £5, I would happily pay a lot more for it!

Toners // A lot of people don't seen the point in toners, but they are one of the most important steps for me. Caroline Hirons *the skincare GOD* emphasises the importance of an 'acid toner' instead of a stereotypical toner. Personally, I like to mix and match depending on the condition of my skin. When  I don't have many spots and have billions of the scars they've left behind, I like to opt for an acid toner like the First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads, or the Pixi Glow Tonic. The First Aid Beauty pads are a very mild form of acid and are suitable for use both morning and evening. Personally I like to use them in the evening as my skin can sometimes be left a little red afterwards, and when in a rush on a morning I don't want to be waiting around for the redness to go down before doing my makeup. If I am wanting to use an acid in the morning (or evening as it's so gentle it can be used for both), I opt for the Pixi Glow Tonic which is so good I have a backup ready and I still have half a bottle left! When my skin is in need of some soothing I like to use the Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic, as it is brilliant for soothing those troublesome under the skin spots!

Scrubs // Now I don't tend to use scrubs that much anymore, as using acid toners on a twice daily basis tends to exfoliate my skin enough. But for those occasions where my skin is a little dryer or dehydrated than usual, I like to have a couple in for when I need them. My usual go-to scrub for the last two or three years has been the Soap and Glory Scrub Your Nose In It Facial Scrub, as I just haven't found anything else that compares to it. It contains both AHAs and BHAs, so exfoliates skin on multiple different levels. It really helps sort my skin out as it is quite a fine scrub so you don't need to apply any pressure to get rid of dry patches. It also doubles up as a mask which is great when you are experiencing a breakout because the acids in it help calm down your skin, and aid absorption of your other skincare products.

Masks // I like to treat my skin to a face mask at least once a week. I aim to use a face mask twice a week, and sometimes throw an overnight face mask into the mix mid-week for good measure. I can really see a difference in my skin when I forget to use one, so I schedule a mask into my week by placing it on my to do list. My favourite type of masks are clay masks as they are great for drawing out impurities and calming down any blemishes. At the moment my go-to face masks are the Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Face Mask and the Good Things Skin Manuka Honey Face Mask. They are both quite similar, although the Good Things mask has white clay in it so cleansers on a more deeper level.

Serums and Oils // These are a fairly recent additions into my skincare routine, as I too was under the myth that oils would make my skin oiler, and serums were pointless. But the opposite is infact true, oils balance the skin and prevent the production of excess oils leaving your skin looking 'normal'. Serums are targeted at reducing specific skin complaints, and are more effective than anything else. Oils, don't really do much for blemishes, but they help calm the skin which in turn helps to reduce the size of blemishes. One of my current favourite oils is the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, as it feels so luxurious to apply before hopping into bed. The Estee Lauder serums are also lovely.

Moisturisers // Obviously you need a moisturiser to protect your skin, keep it hydrated, and form a barrier against the elements. I have quite a few different moisturisers that I pick and choose depending on how my skin is looking on that particular day. If my skin looks a tad oily, I like to opt for a lighter moisturiser such as the Simple Kind To Skin Light Moisturiser, whereas if my skin is looking dry and dehydrated I pick out a thicker, richer moisturiser such as the Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser for Normal/Combination Skin. In the evening I occasionally switch out my moisturiser for an overnight face mask such as the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Face Mask or the Origins Calm To The Senses Overnight Face Mask.

SPF // This is less of an essential during the winter months, but extrememly important to be using all year round. The face is exposed to the sun's rays constantly, and it is very hard to provide it with shade. The days of slathering your face in traditional suncreams are over, and new lightweight facial SPFs are popping up everywhere. I use the La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light Fluid SPF 50+, but I've heard that the Benefit Dream Screen is also good.

Netflix Picks 2.0

It's no secret that I love Netflix, and after recently chipping one of the bones in ankle YAY (read more about that here) I've spent the last 6 weeks curled up in a ball on the sofa dosed up on prescription painkillers and binge-watching all that Netflix has to offer. Since it's been a while since I last shared what I've been watching, I thought (under the circumstances) I would give you a little update.

The Good Wife // I started watching The Good Wife at the start of May, and quickly became obsessed. I tried to watch at some point last year, and I didn't really like it. This happened when I first watched Suits, and as I mentioned in my last post I ended up loving that too. It's about a lawyer (Alicia Florrick) who returns to the world of Law after taking time off to raise her children. Being a bit rusty (and the wife of a corrupt politician), nobody is willing to hire her until she runs into an old friend from university. The show follows Alicia as she gets back into the swing of things, making a new life for herself and her two children. Full of scandals, corruption, and drama, it is perfect for those looking for something a little more exciting.

Community // I am somewhat ashamed to say that I got through all 6 seasons in 7 days. That is absolutely atrocious. And that included having to hunt down the 6th season that isn't currently available to watch on Netflix. The show begins with lawyer Jeff (Joel McHale) being found out for never having graduated with a law degree. Forced to go back to college, Jeff ends up at Greendale Community College - a failing school run by the hilariously eccentric Dean Pelton (Jim Rash). Jeff makes friends with fellow classmates and they set up a little study group, which work towards fixing the Dean's bad financial decisions.

Arrested Development // I LOOOOOOOVVEEEDDDDD this! I don't know why but I related to the storyline so much. Maybe it was the whole sane person in a dysfunctional family thing, IDK. The program is focused on the affluent Bluth family, who descend into chaos after the family business goes bust. Accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, the family struggle with their materialistic and selfish nature. Levelheaded Michael Blush steps in to take care of the family's finances, and the show follows him as he battles to restore the family business.

Degrassi: Next Class // Not something I'd usually watch, but I was running out of options due to not being able to do anything. I'm not sure if I am completely in love with the programme, but I did get through the series quite quickly and was happy when I saw that I second season was on it's way. The show follows students in a high school and each episode touches on a different teen issue such as teen pregnancy, drugs, alcohol, and racism. For anyone that doesn't know the show is one of several spin off shows from the original Degrassi franchise, and centres around life on De Grassi street in Toronto.

Flaked // I knew I would love this when I saw that it was coming to Netflix. Will Arnett is absolutely hilarious and I don't think I've ever disliked anything he has been in. He played GOB in Arrested Development and I've been obsessed with him ever since! Plus he was married to Amy Poehler at one bit, so yanno #goals. Flaked is a semi-autobiographical show that follows the life of Chip, a middle-aged alcoholic, who offers up self-help advice but is need of some himself. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, I know many people who have enjoyed it, and last week the show was renewed for a second series to premiere on Netflix in 2017 - so it must be doing something right!

Lady Dynamite // I'm not completely sure why I opted to watch this, and if I'm honest I have no idea what was going on half the time. I found it hilarious at times, but I'm not sure I followed the plot. Was there even a plot? I have no idea! The show follows actress Maria Bamford (played by herself) who moves back to Los Angeles after spending time in recovery for bipolar disorder, and attempts to start her life back up. There are a lot of flashbacks which is probably the reason why I didn't always follow the storyline, but I'd watch it again purely for the humour!

Jane The Virgin // I wanted to watch this when it first aired on TV, but for some reason or another I missed it. When it came on to Netflix I was straight on it, and I absolutely loved it! Luckily, I watched it in time for the start of the second series on E4. The program follows a woman called Jane (obvs) who is accidentally artificially inseminated after a doctor mixes up two patients. Becoming pregnant completely throws off Jane's life plan, and the show follows her throughout her pregnancy and in the months after the birth of her son Mateo. And just to make things a little bit more interesting, there are also criminal masterminds, murders and kidnappings!

Gilmore Girls // Over the last couple of days I've started watching Gilmore Girls again and OMG I am hooked. I used to watch it a little bit in my youth (makes me sound 87 when in fact I am 20), and I never really appreciated it enough. Netflix has only recently added it, and I am already halfway through season 2! As you are reading this I am most likely watching an episode, and to be completely honest you should be too.

Parks and Recreation // Although technically not on Netflix (c'mon UK sort it out already), I've recently started watching Parks and Rec (via Amazon Video fyi). I've been a big fan of Amy Poehler's for YEARS and I don't know why it's taken me so long to get round to watching it! If you've never watched it, the show follows the staff of the Parks and Recreation department of the Pawnee government - a fictional town in Indiana. Leslie Knope is the brains behind the department, and I love her so much. I've almost finished season 5, and my favourite character is Ron Swanson bc I relate to him so much! I have no idea why though!

What are you watching at the moment?
